The title of the film is derived from the African American tradition of bride and groom jumping over a ceremonial broom after being married.

TriStar Pictures distributed the film in the United States on May 6, 2011.
It should not be confused with the 2008 feature film Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom, directed by Patrik-Ian Polk and based on the LOGO television series, which features a gay marriage that also takes place on the island of Martha's Vineyard.
